Since 2009, NBA Green Week has spanned a week and a day in early April. It is an opportunity for the NBA to use its media popularity to promote environmental responsibility. Teams throughout the league drive the point home with activities such as community events and fund-raising auctions. One way coaching staffs get involved is by wearing NBA Green lapel pins.

NBA Green Week 2012 was the first year that involved a corporate presenting partnership. Sprint committed to a Facebook promotion as well as spreading the word about their Sprint Buyback program. This encourages wireless-device users to recycle their tech gadgets instead of sending them to the landfill.

Since its inception, Green Week has been a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The Council is one of the most dedicated environmental groups in action today. They were founded in the early 1970s and currently have the support of 1.3 million members.
