What dog treat was just recalled?
Despite reports since November 2011 of over 900 dogs falling ill or dying after eating chicken jerky products made in China, there have been no recent dog treat recalls.
The three top brands of chicken jerky treats among those most recently mentioned in complaints included Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by the Del Monte Corp. and Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brands, produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. Import records show that Canyon Creek Ranch and Waggin’ Train are both produced and supplied by JOC Great Wall Corp. Ltd. of Nanjing, China.
The FDA has not been able to discover why the treats are causing kidney problems, increased urination, increased water consumption, diarrhea with blood, vomiting, decreased activity, decreased appetite, kidney failure, or death in dogs.
As of May 2012, the FDA has issued a cautionary warning for the treats and has advised owners to report illness associated with pet food products via telephone or online.
