Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where his father, Drederick Irving, played professional basketball for the Bulleen Boomers. Irving subsequently lived in Australia before relocating to the United States at the age of 2. He has dual citizenship in the United States and Australia.
Irving's mother, Elizabeth, died from an illness when he was four, so Drederick raised him with the help of Irving's aunts. Irving had a love of basketball from a young age through watching his father. He was a highly recruited as a senior at St. Patrick High School in New Jersey and committed to Duke University.
As a freshman he was a leader; however, his season was cut short with a toe injury. After returning in the NCAA tournament, Irving announced he was declaring himself eligible for the 2011 NBA Draft after signing with 24..7 Sports Management and agent Jeffrey Wechsler.
