What does OPS mean in major league baseball

OPS stands for On Base Plus Slugging: the sum of a player’s on-base percentage and their slugging percentage.

Occasionally referred to as Offensive Production Statistic, OPS is a common statistic used by sabermetricians to judge a player's overall offensive performance.

The basic formula is: OPS = OBP + SLG; where OBP is on-base percentage, and SLG is slugging percentage.

The on base percentage statistic was originally created by Branch Rickey and Allan Roth in the 1950's. It did not originally include the sacrifice fly denomination. Slugging average was developed later and the two were combined to create On Base Plus Slugging.
