What are the insignas/crosses on the back of the university of Arkansas football helmets?
Those are sledgehammer decals. They are awarded by the coaching staff for achievements on the field. When Petrino took over as coach in 2008, he had a 3-ton rock at the practice field that the players would chip away at with a sledgehammer at the end of the week. The sledgehammer theme stuck around and in 2009 the decals were added. Razorback Award Decals had previously been used in the 1975 and 1976 seasons, but Lou Holtz got rid of the decals when he took over in 1977.
