black friday

The term “Black Friday” first appeared in 1864 to refer to a crash in gold prices. It was re-defined a few times before the late 1960s when it became associated with accounting balance sheets where black ink represented a profit. Black Friday is now the day when most department stores are most expectant of profit. With that in mind, most major department stores will have extended sales and store hours on the Friday after Thanksgiving. With stories of employees being trampled to death and disputing customers shooting each other, these sales are seen as both a gift and a curse. Opening hours seem to get earlier every year as retail giants fight for customer traffic.
