How do we test for radon?

There are several types of devices that can be used for short term testing of radon, the most common include:

  • • Charcoal Canisters
  • • Alpha Track
  • • Electret Ion Chamber
  • • Continuous Monitors
  • • Charcoal Liquid Scintillation"

Each kit will come with directions for how to properly use the testing device, but in general you'll want to close all windows and outside doors, and keep them closed as much as you can throughout the test for an accurate reading; when doing a short term test, make sure to do this at least half a day before you begin the test.

Don't use any fans that bring outside air into the building.

The Environmental Protection Agency offers more information and tips at their web site.

CBC news reports that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, surpassed only by smoking as the number 1 cause.
