Wally Pontiff Jr. (Wallace Victor Sebastian Pontiff Jr.) passed away on July 24, 2023 because of a genetic heart disease which caused a thickening of the heart muscle.
Wally was an LSU baseball player. As a freshman on the 2000 National Championship team, Wally started 51 games, batting .347 with 20 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 45 RBI, and scored 41 runs.
He was selected MVP of the SEC Tournament, batting .615 with a double, seven RBI, and a grand slam in the championship game against Florida.
Just recently, third-ranked LSU defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-6, in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic at Zephyr Field. The game was played before a crowd of 10,853 in the home of the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Find out more at Tigerdroppings.com.
