Why are labels upside down on cranberry sauce cans

An email sent by Ocean Spray to Thefrisky.com, explains the reason why the label is printed upside down:

"Ocean Spray intentionally put the label on so the rounded end of the can is on the top. The reason for this is to assist in getting the sauce out in the shape of a log. By storing it with the label correctly displayed a small air pocket will form at the top of the can which makes the sauce come out more easily upon inverting and opening. "

In buzz, if you haven’t already heard it this Thanksgiving season, someone will mention it soon: Even though homemade cranberry sauce requires more care and effort, the jellied stuff from the can always seems to taste better.

I don’t fault anyone for saying it, and I’m certain I’ve said it myself plenty of times. It is a thing to say, and a charming little conversation starter among people who might not have seen each other for a while. And it’s an entertaining observation to make. Even our own Nate Scott ranked fake cranberry sauce ahead of the real stuff on his definitive Thanksgiving ranking. Read more at usatoday.com.
