Who is the protagonist in thirteen reasons why by jay asher

Clay Jensen is the living protagonist in Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why. He's a nice guy going through the roughest time of his life. He quickly gains our trust and sympathy; we feel bad about what he's going through and we want to see things get better for him. He maintains his good-guy status by actually changing in a positive way after listening to Hannah's tapes; he is able to self-reflect and use the tragedy to become a better person.

Hannah Baker, even though we know from the start that she is dead, she's also considered a protagonist. We still empathize with her throughout the story. We might question her actions and even get angry with her, but she's the one we're rooting for (especially in a world full of super mean teenagers).

Thirteen Reasons Why follows a boy named Clay through an emotional night after he receives a box of cassette tapes from his classmate, Hannah, who recently committed suicide.

The book which was published in 2007 has continued to touch teens and adults and has become Netflix's newest binge-worthy series.

It helped open up a national conversation about bullying and teen suicide. Over the past year, Asher has embarked on a 50 States Against Bullying tour, speaking at a school in every single state to spread awareness of bullying and talk about how to stop it.
