cicadas

3,000 known species of cicada exist worldwide. These annoying insects are best known for their buzzing and clicking noises that can be heard up to a half mile away. Large swarms are infamous for damaging young trees by feasting on them and laying eggs in them. Called the “17 year locust”, they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. Cicadas are eaten in Greece, China, Malaysia, Burma, Latin American and the Congo. The shells are used in Chinese traditional medicine.
