Large swarms are infamous for damaging young trees by feasting on them and laying eggs in them. Called the “17 year locust”, they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. Cicadas are eaten in Greece, China, Malaysia, Burma, Latin American and the Congo. The shells are used in Chinese traditional medicine.
