Most common name in Madagascar?

According statistics found at Students of the World site, the top 3 names in Madagascar for girls are Moira, Aina and Ando. First names for boys are dominated by Tommy, Hery and Kevin.

Moira

Anglicized form of MÁIRE. It also coincides with Greek Μοιρα (Moira) meaning "fate, destiny".

Aina

Variant of AINO. It also means "always" in Finnish.

Balearic form of Anna.

From Japanese 愛 (ai) meaning "love, affection" and 菜 (na) meaning "vegetables, greens", as well as other character combinations.

Tommy

Diminutive of Thomas - Greek form of the Aramaic name תָּאוֹמָא (Ta'oma') which meant "twin".

Kevin

Anglicized form of the Irish name Caoimhín, derived from the older Irish Cóemgein, composed of the Old Irish elements cóem "kind, gentle, handsome" and gein "birth".

Ando and Hery appears to be the shorter versions of their longer origin and hence haven't been labeled with a proper meaning. Hery though (as in Hery Rajaonarimampianina) is the name of Madagascar's president.

According to Russell Smith (BBC News Online), the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar has some of the longest and most difficult to pronounce names in the world.

And unless you speak Malagasy, trying to remember many of the names of people and places on the fourth largest island in the world can be almost impossible. So it is gratifying to know that even Madagascans themselves have trouble with some of them, which may explain why they shorten the 12-letter name of the capital, Antananarivo, to call it simply Tana.
