How many people were born in 1997

The number of births in 1997 was the lowest since 1987; the birth rate was just 14.5 births per 1,000 people, and totaled 3,880,894.

The fertility rate, number of births to women of childbearing age, saw similar declines hitting 65 births per 1,000 women in the age range of 15 to 44.

Teen birth rate also declined during this period, down to 52.3 births per 1,000 women in the age range of 15 to 19, a drop of 4%. The rate in 15 to 17 year old fell further, down 5%, though in the 18 to 19 age range the fall was only 3%.

Fast forwarding to today, birth rates among 15 to 19 year olds has dropped 44% over the past 2 decades, though rates in Kentucky and Indiana have fallen far less.
