What we found is that Les Claypool had a pot-smoking habit in the past. He stopped it as he found it was affecting his memory.
When asked about how he made a name as a winemaker, Claypool said:
Well, I live in the Russian River Valley, which is sort of a mecca of Northern California noir. As I was waning away from my pot-smoking habit, I started drinking the local wares. My neighbors are all winemakers and coopers and vineyard managers. I just fell into this culture.
According to Dailypress.com, Claypool grew up around working folks as much as urban hipsters. The community was a mostly rural suburb of San Francisco. Characters from his youth provided inspiration for lyrics. For example, alcohol and drug abuse was rampant in his family. Related topics have cropped up in his songs.
