Why would a high school send you a certified letter for

A certified letter will be sent home from the school informing parent, guardian, or other person who has control or charge of a child that the the student has an excessive unexcused absences.

The number of days could vary. Schools may deliver certified mail after missing five, seven or ten days of school.

This is part of the school systems' student attendance protocol. Below is a sample high school attendance plan provided by Indiana Department of Education:
