President and dictator of Iraq from 1979 to 2003, Saddam Hussein, was hanged on December 30, 2006, in Kadhimiya, at Camp Justice, an Iraqi base in Baghdad.
His tomb was housed at the Al-Awja Religious Compound in Al-Awja Salah ad Din, Iraq.
He was captured on December 13, 2003, hiding in a small underground bunker near a farmhouse in ad-Dawr, near Tikrit. From there, he was moved to a U.S. base in Baghdad, where he would remain until June 30, 2004, when he was officially handed over to the interim Iraqi government to stand trial for crimes against humanity.
