According to 2015 article in the Washington Post:
“There are roughly 5,900 U.S. service members who self-identify as Muslims — just 0.27 percent of both active and reserve components of the military.”
Muslims have been part of the US Military since the days when General George Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the American War for Independence.
As the Huffington Post relates, Muslims have also fought in the civil war, and more than 3,500 Muslims fought in Afghanistan and Iraq. High ranking military consider Muslims a vital component to the US military because of their linguistic skills and cultural understanding of Muslims living around the world.
