The drug belongs to the thiazide diuretics drug class and is in pregnancy category B (no proven risk in humans). Other brand names include Aquazide H, HydroDIURIL, and Microzide.

Hydrochlorothiazide, also known as HCTZ helps keep the body from absorbing too much salt. It treats high blood pressure (hypertension), as well as fluid retention (edema) in people caused by taking estrogen or steroids, and edema associated with kidney disorders, cirrhosis of the liver, and congestive heart failure.
