What is bells palsy? <?>enigma<?>

Not Medical Advice: According to Jcasesobstetgynecol.com, Bell's palsy is an enigma that is most common during pregnancy and the puerperium.

Bell's palsy is an unexplained episode of facial muscle weakness or paralysis that begins suddenly and worsens over three to five days. This condition results from damage to the 7th (facial) cranial nerve, and pain and discomfort usually occurs on one side of the face or head.

As stated at Urmc.rochester.edu, a specific cause of Bell's palsy is unknown, however, it has been suggested that the disorder may be inherited. It also may be associated with the following:

  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • trauma
  • toxins
  • Lyme disease
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • sarcoidosis
  • myasthenia gravis
  • infection

Bell's palsy often lasts several months, which can make having a normal life very challenging, and some people never fully recover. Check out a guide to quick recovery from Bell's Palsy at Healthwyze.org.
