What is a 'Red Eye' flight?

Red-eye flights are normally flights that depart late at night and arrive early in the morning, outside of the common operational day. It is a casual name used to refer to such flight times and the name refers to the eye fatigue that accompanies late night-early morning travel.

In the common usage of the term for Canada and U.S. flights, red-eye flights are those that depart from the west coast to arrive on the east coast. They would leave sometime between 10pm to 1am and arrive 5am to 7am.

Why do airlines overbook red eye flights? Oversleeping and traffic jams is just the beginning...find out more at Leader-Post.
