If you urinate on yourself or wet your pants in your dream, it may imply that you are on the verge of an emotional outburst and are desperate to release the feelings that you have bottled up inside of you. To urinate on yourself in public signifies feelings of shame and inadequacy. Sometimes these types of dreams reflect actual pressure on the bladder during sleep.
Dreaming that you are urinating can symbolize a cleansing and a release of repressed or negative emotions. Urination is also symbolic of having or lacking basic control of your life and not being able to express yourself in a positive manner.
The question of why we dream remains unanswered. Some researchers think dreaming might have evolved for physiological reasons. There is a great deal of neuronal activity occurring while we sleep, especially in REM, and it has been suggested that dreams may just be a meaningless by-product of this biological function.
Another theory of dreaming is put forth by Rosalind Cartwright, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Cartwright believes that dreams are the mechanism.
