What does GH stand for on the right side of an illinois military license plate

Unlike other Illinois license codes such as DV, NG and CMH which have corresponding words that begin with the same letter that they represent, the acronym GH - the designated code to identify an Afghanistan Campaign Medal license plate - appears to be just a two-letter code assigned to reflect who owns that plate.

DV, NG and CMH translate to Disabled Veteran, National Guard and Congressional Medal of Honor respectively.

While it could get an AF code (as it is how you abbreviate Afghanistan), AF is allotted to the Air Force.

The code GH is not the only Illinois license plate that carries a somewhat unrelated code to the plate that it goes with. Among other plates include Marine Corps (DD); U.S. Army Veteran (GI); and West Point Bicentennial (CK).

The Afghanistan Campaign Medal license plates may be issued to any Illinois resident who has been awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal from the U.S. Armed Forces.
