One of the most important patrons of art who was portrayed at San Vitale. Who was this emperor?

It is Justinian the Great, a Byzantine (east Roman) emperor from 527 to 565.

“San Vitale” is one of the most important surviving examples of Byzantine architecture and mosaic work. And one of its most famous images of political authority is the mosaic of the Emperor Justinian and his court in the sanctuary of the church of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy.

The major theme of this mosaic program is the authority of the emperor in the Christian plan of history. The mosaic program can also be seen to give visual testament to the major ambitions of Justinian's reign: As heir to the tradition of Roman Emperors, Justinian sought to restore the territorial boundaries of the Empire.

According to Reuters, the value of the online fine art market is expected to more than double to $3.76 billion in the next five years as it increasingly attracts younger and first-time buyers. Find out more here.
