Martin is the son of James “Jim” Schienle, from Wisconsin, and Jean St. James (originally Pflieger), an actress from Kansas. He chose his stage name as he and his mom thought it was simpler to say.
Martin is a member of the Sunday Men's Basketball League. He was in the same class, at the Los Angeles County High School For the Arts, with Dayna Price. The two later worked together on Freaks and Geeks (1999) and Roswell (1999).
