If the sum of three consecutive even numbers is 246, find the numbers

The numbers are 80, 82, 84.

Solution:

By examining the integers 1,2,3,4,5,6...observe that the difference between any two consecutive even (or odd) integers is 2.

Also for any integer x, 2x is even. Now let 2x, be the smallest of the integers, then the next two even integers are 2x + 2 and 2x + 4.

Sum of the integers = 246

Therefore, 2x + (2x + 2) + (2x + 4) = 246

6x + 6 = 246

6x / 6 = 240 / 6

x = 40

Hence the numbers 2x, 2x + 2 and 2x + 4 are 80, 82, 84.
