The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing or NASCAR has been around for 67 years as of this writing.
A mechanic and auto-repair shop owner in Washington, D. C. William "Bill" France Sr. founded NASCAR on February 21, 1948. He moved to the Daytona Beach, Florida in the mid-1930's. During that time, the Daytona area was a gathering spot for racing enthusiasts and it didn't take long for France to become involved in racing cars and promoting races.
Among the issues France resolved when he served as the first president of NASCAR were the race tracks that could not handle the crowds or the cars, varying rules from location to location, and how dishonest promoters could abscond with prize money.
Using his Ford Modified, Robert "Red" Byron was the first season champion in the NASCAR Modified Division in 1948. Jim Roper with his Lincoln won the NASCAR's First Strictly Stock race in 1949.
