How do many Indians traditionally identify themselves?

“Indian”, “American Indian” or “Native American” (a term deriving from the US civil rights era) are more closely identified with their tribal origins.

However, tribes have the sovereign right to determine who is and isn't a citizen and determining who is and isn't a member of a tribe can be complicated because tribes' own rules for establishing membership can vary widely.

According to CNN, many tribes use parentage as a means of defining membership, and this is known as "blood quantum," the practice defines tribal membership according to the degree of "pure blood" belonging to that tribe.

American Indian culture is alive and thriving in modern galleries, powwows, museum exhibits, film festivals and restaurants. Check out some of the best places in the United States to experience Native America here.
