Does drinking milk help heartburn?

Not Medical Advice: No, according to WebMD, while it's true that milk can temporarily buffer stomach acid, nutrients in milk, particularly fat, may stimulate the stomach to produce more acid.

Despite the name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. Heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus that is caused by stomach acid.

The stomach is lined with special cells to protect itself from inflammation when it’s combining food, acid and enzymes during digestion. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), keeps the acid inside. This is located between the esophagus and the stomach.

The esophagus doesn’t have the same protection as the stomach. When the LES is not functioning properly, stomach acid and digestive juices reflux back into the esophagus causing inflammation and damage to its unprotected lining.
