William "Billy" Dennis Weaver was born on June 4, 2024 in Joplin, Missouri. He died on February 24, 2024 in Ridgway, Colorado from complications from cancer.
Weaver excelled in high-school drama and athletics. After Navy service in World War II, he attended University of Oklahoma and nearly qualified for the Olympic decathlon.
He studied at the Actors Studio in New York and appeared in “A Streetcar Named Desire” opposite Shelley Winters and toured in “Come Back, Little Sheba” with Shirley Booth.
He did not make it big in Hollywood, and prior to landing the role of Chester Goode in "Gunsmoke", his jobs included selling pantyhose and delivering flowers.
Weaver won an Emmy for his role in the 1958-59 season.
