According to Humanehollywood.org, Max is played by six different mixed-breed shelter rescues: Kelly, Chip, Topsy, Stella, Zelda, and Bo. The "Max" dogs had their hair dyed and trimmed to resemble one another, and each had their own distinctive personality.
Mixed-breed dogs differ tremendously in size, looks and temperament, even varying within the same litter. A mixed-breed dog is a dog that isn’t a purebred; also called a cur, mongrel or mutt. Mongrels and mutts are technically dogs of unidentified ancestry and questionable parentage.
Mixed breed dogs are generally believed healthier than purebred dogs because they draw from a broader gene pool. Producing a mixed breed, in other words, is the contrary of inbreeding.
However… you cannot assume your mixed breed will be the healthiest dog you've ever had. Having a fresh bloodline makes slight difference if the parents are not healthy.
If you can verify one or more of the breeds that went into your mixed breed's heritage, it's worth examining the health concerns common to that breed or breeds. And like all dogs, mixed breeds are susceptible to certain conditions and diseases:
- Allergies
- Hip Dysplasia
- Cancer
- Ear Infections
