Purple Rain (the motion picture soundtrack to the movie Purple Rain) is the sixth full-length studio album by Prince, and the first to be credited to Prince and the Revolution.
It was released worldwide in June 1984, a month before the movie, Purple Rain opened in theaters.
The song was written for the Purple Rain film (it was the centerpiece of the film and a key plot point), but it served Prince very well in concert, where it was often his showstopper.
Purple Rain reached number 1 on the US Billboard Top Lps And Tape chart, where it remained for 12 weeks (the album remained almost a year in the US charts). It also reached number 1 on the US Billboard Black LPs chart, remaining at top position for 19 weeks.
Fallen music superstar Prince is proving to be just as big a chart-topper in death as he was in life, with his albums swamping the top slots on download charts at both Amazon.com and Apple's iTunes. Find out more at Cnbc.com.
