What does maiming by mob mean?

Maiming by mob is a felony, which was put on the books in Virginia after the Civil War to combat lynching. Maiming by mob is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Maiming by mob is from the Virginia Code Section 18.2-41: Shooting, stabbing, etc., with intent to maim, kill, etc., by mob.

Any and every person composing a mob which shall maliciously or unlawfully shoot, stab, cut or wound any person, or by any means cause him bodily injury with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or kill him, shall be guilty of a Class 3 felony.

To put up a sentence of "maiming by mob", the evidence must establish that the defendant was a member of a group composing a mob; that the mob caused the victim bodily injury; and that the mob acted with malicious intent "to maim, disable, or kill" the victim.

Back in 1993, retired professional basketball player, Allen Iverson (who was 18 at that time) and his co-defendants were charged with "maiming by mob".
