What are signs of gout

Not Medical Advice: Signs of gout include the sudden onset of swollen, painful, red joints. An attack usually lasts 5 to 7 days.

Gout is a type of arthritis that usually affects only one joint at a time, most commonly the base of the big toe. There are reports of it plaguing elbows, wrists, knees, fingers, and ankles.

Risk factors include genetics, excessive alcohol use, being overweight, certain foods like red meat and seafood, and medical conditions like kidney disease.

Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in the blood stream. When there is too much, it deposits in the joints. The immune system tries to attack the uric acid crystals causing sudden inflammation, pain, and swelling.

Treatment includes ibuprofen for pain and inflammation, corticosteroids, rest, medication to reduce uric acid buildup, and a low fat diet with limited amounts of seafood, meat and alcohol.
