Diller is credited as opening the door for future female comics after being told there could be no such thing as a successful female comic; a man's profession.

She married Sherwood Anderson Diller on November 4, 1939, and had six children, though one passed away in infancy. She and Sherwood divorced in 1965, and later that year married film actor and TV host Warde Donovan; they had no children together, and divorced in 1975.

In January of 1958 she got her first nation-wide TV exposure as a contestant on You Bet Your Life, which featured Groucho Marx as its host.

Diller amassed 77 acting credits and a staggering 213 appearances as herself during her career.
