Can plastic be broken down?

Yes. However, most of it can take thousands of years to degrade.

In 2009, National Geographic reported that some plastics actually decompose rapidly in the ocean. Scientists had previously thought plastics broke down only at very high temperatures and over hundreds of years.

The researchers behind the study, however, found that plastic breaks down at cooler temperatures than expected, and within a year of the trash hitting the water.

Just In! Scientists have discovered a species of bacteria capable of breaking down commonly used PET plastic but remain unsure of its potential applications. Catch more of the story at The Guardian.
